About

Focal is a French loudspeaker and headphone manufacturer founded in 1979 by Jacques Mahul in Saint-Etienne, France. The company originally operated under the name JMlab before rebranding to Focal-JMlab and eventually Focal. In 2011, Focal merged with British audio brand Naim Audio to form the Focal-Naim group, which was later acquired by the Vervent Audio Group. The company operates a large manufacturing facility in Saint-Etienne where it produces loudspeaker drivers, complete loudspeaker systems, and headphones.

Focal's product range includes home loudspeakers (Utopia, Sopra, Aria, and Chora lines), headphones (Utopia, Stellia, Celestee, Bathys), professional studio monitors, in-car audio systems, and custom installation products. The Utopia line represents the flagship tier, with the Grande Utopia EM loudspeaker featuring an electromagnetically controlled woofer and standing over 6 feet tall. Focal is one of the few audio companies that manufactures its own speaker drivers from raw materials, including cone fabrication, magnet assembly, and voice coil winding.

The company has developed several proprietary driver technologies. These include the inverted beryllium dome tweeter (used in Utopia products), W-composite sandwich cones made from layers of structural foam and glass fiber, flax cones made from natural flax fiber sandwiched between glass fiber layers, and the M-profile dome shape for tweeters. Focal's beryllium tweeters are manufactured in-house using a vapor deposition process, making Focal one of very few companies worldwide to produce beryllium diaphragms at scale.

Product pricing spans from approximately $500 for Chora entry-level loudspeakers to over $200,000 per pair for the Grande Utopia EM. The Utopia open-back headphone, priced around $4,000, is widely regarded as one of the finest dynamic driver headphones available. Focal employs over 600 people and produces more than 100,000 loudspeaker drivers annually at its Saint-Etienne facility, serving both its own brands and OEM customers.

Focal brings a distinctively French approach to high-end audio -- engineering rigor married to aesthetic refinement and a house sound that prioritizes transparency and dynamic energy. The brands proprietary driver technologies, including Beryllium tweeters and W-composite cones, are manufactured in-house in Saint-Etienne, giving Focal unusual vertical integration for a speaker manufacturer. The Utopia line, both in speakers and headphones, represents the pinnacle of the brands capabilities and competes credibly with the worlds finest at any price. The Grande Utopia EM, with its electromagnetic woofer, is an engineering tour de force. The merger with Naim Audio has created a complementary ecosystem: Focals speakers paired with Naims amplification form systems of genuine synergy. The brands wide product range includes professional studio monitors, which lends credibility to the domestic lineup. Focal occasionally leans toward an analytical presentation that some listeners find less forgiving than warmer-sounding alternatives, but for those who value accuracy and dynamics, Focal is exceptional.
