About

Moncler is a luxury outerwear brand founded in 1952 in Monestier-de-Clermont, France, by Rene Ramillon and Andre Vincent, and named after an abbreviation of the alpine village where it began. The company initially produced quilted sleeping bags and tents before developing down jackets, which were used on French mountaineering expeditions in the 1950s and worn by the French national ski team at the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics.

Italian entrepreneur Remo Ruffini acquired the brand in 2003, repositioned it as a luxury house, and moved its headquarters to Milan. Moncler listed on the Borsa Italiana in 2013. The brand's core offering remains down jackets and technical outerwear, complemented by ready-to-wear, knitwear, footwear, and accessories. Its main lines include the mainline collection, Moncler Grenoble for skiwear and mountain performance, and Moncler Enfant for children. The Moncler Genius project, launched in 2018, produces rotating collaborations with designers including Pierpaolo Piccioli, Hiroshi Fujiwara, and Rick Owens.

In 2021 Moncler acquired Stone Island, forming the Moncler Group. The company operates directly managed boutiques in major cities worldwide and sells through its own e-commerce platform and select luxury retailers.

Designer Clothing

Beyond outerwear, Moncler produces ready-to-wear, knitwear, footwear, and accessories. Its Moncler Genius project, launched in 2018, releases rotating designer collaborations that have included Pierpaolo Piccioli, Hiroshi Fujiwara, and Rick Owens, positioning the brand within contemporary luxury fashion as well as technical apparel.

Luxury Childrenswear

Moncler Enfant is the brand's dedicated childrenswear line, offering down jackets, skiwear, and ready-to-wear for babies and children up to teenage sizes. The collections mirror the adult mainline's quilted outerwear codes and are sold through Moncler boutiques, its e-commerce site, and luxury department stores.

Luxury Outerwear

Moncler is one of the defining names in luxury outerwear. The brand built its reputation on expedition-grade down jackets developed for French mountaineering teams in the 1950s, and its quilted nylon laque puffers remain its signature product. The Grenoble line extends the offering into technical skiwear and high-performance mountain clothing.

Moncler's transformation under Remo Ruffini since 2003 is one of the more instructive brand turnarounds in modern luxury: a functional alpine outerwear maker, once genuinely used on French mountaineering expeditions, rebuilt into a status symbol without ever fully abandoning its technical roots. That dual identity is the brand's core strength. The Grenoble line keeps a credible foot in performance skiwear while the mainline and Genius collaborations, with designers ranging from Pierpaolo Piccioli to Rick Owens, drive the cultural relevance and hype that sustain the brand's premium pricing. Construction quality on the down jackets remains genuinely excellent, with down fill and quilting that justify at least part of the price premium on technical merit alone. Where Moncler is more vulnerable is the broader ready-to-wear and accessories extension, which trades more on logo recognition than on the craftsmanship that built the house, and pricing across the board sits well above what the actual materials and construction alone would command, reflecting brand markup as much as quality. The 2021 Stone Island acquisition signals ambitions of a broader outerwear-focused group. Moncler remains a dominant, culturally relevant luxury outerwear brand, even if its expansion into general fashion is less compelling than its jacket heritage.
