About

Prada Group is an Italian luxury goods group headquartered in Milan. Its origins date to 1913, when Mario Prada opened the Fratelli Prada leather goods shop in Milan's Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Under Miuccia Prada, who took over the family business in 1978, and her husband Patrizio Bertelli, the company grew from a leather goods house into a multi-brand luxury group. Prada S.p.A. has been listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange since 2011, with the Prada family retaining control.

The group's portfolio comprises Prada, its flagship fashion house; Miu Miu, founded by Miuccia Prada in 1993; the English shoemaker Church's; the driving-shoe brand Car Shoe; the historic Milanese patisserie Marchesi 1824; and the Luna Rossa sailing team, which competes in the America's Cup. In 2025 the group agreed to acquire Versace from Capri Holdings, one of the most significant Italian luxury transactions in years.

Prada Group is distinguished among luxury conglomerates by its vertically integrated industrial structure, operating over twenty owned factories, mostly in Italy, and controlling much of its leather goods, footwear, and ready-to-wear production. The group runs more than six hundred directly operated stores worldwide and has largely eliminated wholesale distribution in favor of retail control.

The group also maintains Fondazione Prada, a contemporary art foundation with venues in Milan and Venice, and has pursued sustainability initiatives including its Re-Nylon regenerated nylon program.

Luxury Conglomerates

Prada Group is Milan's family-controlled luxury group, listed in Hong Kong and built around Prada, Miu Miu, Church's, Car Shoe, and Marchesi 1824, with an agreement to acquire Versace announced in 2025. Its vertically integrated Italian manufacturing base and directly operated retail network set it apart among luxury conglomerates.

Prada Group's defining strength is a discipline most luxury conglomerates have abandoned: genuine vertical integration, with more than twenty owned Italian factories keeping production, and creative control, in-house rather than outsourced to third-party manufacturers chasing margin. That structure has preserved a level of quality consistency across Prada and Miu Miu that mass-scaled competitors sometimes struggle to match as they grow. Miuccia Prada's design sensibility remains one of the most consistently intellectually engaging in fashion, resisting trend-chasing in favor of a recognizable, slightly subversive point of view that has aged remarkably well since the 1990s. The pending Versace acquisition is a significant bet, and integrating a house with a very different design language and troubled recent history will test the group's operational discipline in ways its existing portfolio, Church's and Car Shoe included, has not. Fondazione Prada adds genuine cultural weight rather than mere philanthropic gesture. Eliminating wholesale in favor of retail control has strengthened brand positioning at some cost to accessibility and short-term revenue flexibility.
