Nicolas Ruinart was inspired by his uncle, Dom Thierry Ruinart, a Benedictine monk and contemporary of Dom Perignon at the Abbey of Hautvillers, who had recognized the commercial potential of the sparkling wines being produced in the Champagne region.

Ruinart is particularly associated with Chardonnay, which forms the backbone of its house style. The Blanc de Blancs, made entirely from Chardonnay, is considered the house's signature wine. The range also includes the R de Ruinart Brut, Rose, and the prestige cuvee Dom Ruinart, which is produced from Grand Cru Chardonnay and aged for extended periods before release. Dom Ruinart blanc de blancs and rose represent the pinnacle of the house's production.

The house is owned by LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton and operates from its historic cellars in Reims, which are housed in Gallo-Roman crayeres, ancient chalk quarries dating to the 3rd century that provide naturally constant temperature and humidity conditions for aging. The crayeres were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.

Ruinart maintains a strong association with contemporary art, commissioning artists to create limited-edition packaging and installations.
